A teacher in Florida was arrested on Thanksgiving night after being found naked inside an elementary school classroom, with an assortment of allegedly "disturbing" items and drugs.
Knewz.com has learned that the authorities caught the teacher while responding to a burglary alarm that was tripped inside the school.
The incident occurred at the Windmill Point Elementary School in the city of Port St. Lucie, Florida, with the responding authorities describing the situation as "deeply unsettling."
While responding to an alarm that suggested a potential was in progress at the premises of the elementary school, the school authorities found 34-year-old teacher Joe Urias naked in a classroom with a slew of bizarre items including a laptop, sex toys, and women's underwear.
Urias was also allegedly found in possession of several food items and marijuana, and had even reportedly made a makeshift bed in the classroom.
When the teacher realized he had been seen, he tried to quickly get dressed and make a swift getaway from the police, according to reports.
The situation escalated further when Urias punched one of the deputies in the face once they almost caught up with him.
However, the deputy still managed to stop Urias and hold him until backup arrived and he was taken into custody, reports have mentioned.
St. Lucie County Deputy Eric Holbert, who is one of the several deputies who live on school grounds in the county, recounted the entire incident, saying that the "more it unfolded, the weirder it got."
Deputy Holbert also said that the "makeshift bed" Urias had made was actually "a large pillow that kids sleep on," adding that there was "some sort of stain on that."
"He was naked when I saw him," Holbert said in a statement.
Narrating the details of the chase that ensued once the teacher tried to make a run for it, Holbert said:
"I identified myself, I held both of my hands up and said ‘Deputy sheriff, stop! And he said ‘No bro’ and tried to run through me... We tussled a little bit, he hit me right here in the lip, I hit him in the jaw and I was able to hold him with a jiu-jitsu seatbelt grip."
Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk pointed out that there were no children present on the premises when the incident occurred – since it was night and it was during the Thanksgiving holidays – although adding that he did not "even want to get into" the "vulgarity" of the incident.
"There were no children present. There was nobody inside the school at the time. He was by himself. You know, as to the vulgarity, I think I just don't even want to get into his mind and think about what he was thinking," Chief Niemczyk said in his statement.
Urias was a teacher at Somerset College Preparatory Academy, a secondary school in Saint Lucie West, Florida. However, Urias was promptly fired from his position in the aftermath of the incident on Thanksgiving night.
Somerset College Prep. released a statement following the incident on Facebook, which read:
"We are reaching out to inform you about a matter that recently came to our attention involving allegations, unrelated to our school, against an individual formerly employed at our school. Please be assured that we are cooperating with law enforcement as they address this situation."
"We want to emphasize that the safety and well-being of our students and community are our top priority. As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe environment, all prospective employees at our school undergo thorough background checks and screening conducted by the local school district. We do not hire anyone without this clearance," the statement added.
"We have handled this matter administratively and will take all necessary actions to ensure that this individual does not return to our campus."
