A recent poll conducted among voters in the seven swing states shows former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris locked in an almost even standing, with mere weeks to go before Election Day.
Knewz.com has learned that the poll, conducted earlier in October, surveyed over 5,000 registered voters—the majority of whom have already zeroed in on a candidate for whom they intend to cast their votes.
The results of the poll show that around 47% of registered voters say they will definitely or probably support Harris in the 2024 White House race, while 47% are almost sure they would cast their votes for the Republican Presidential nominee.
The two candidates are on almost similar standing among the subset of likely voters in the swing states as well, with 49% supporting Harris and 48% supporting Trump.
The recent poll was conducted by The Washington Post and George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, which also conducted a poll of swing state voters in May 2024.
The results of the poll from May, when President Joe Biden was still in the running, showed a different picture of Democrat support in the swing states, as 41% of voters were inclined towards voting for the incumbent President.
In comparison, Harris has emerged as the favored candidate for 47% of registered voters, marking a six-point increase in Democrat support in the swing states.
On the other hand, the support for Trump has not seen much of a noticeable change over the past few months, as the former President was favored by 48% of registered swing state voters— almost the same percentage of people who said they intend to vote for him in the October poll.
In the recent Washington Post-Schar School poll, Trump seems to be commanding the most support among registered voters in the swing state of Arizona, where he is being favored by 50% of registered voters.
His second-biggest swing state supporter, per the recent poll, seems to be North Carolina, where he is commanding the support of 49% of registered voters.
The numbers are in favor of Trump in Michigan as well, with 47% of registered voters inclined toward voting for Trump.
On the other hand, Harris is commanding a notable lead in the battleground states of Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
The Washington Post-Schar School poll showed that the Democratic Presidential nominee is being favored by 50% of voters in the "Peach State"—commanding a six-point lead over former President Trump.
In Nevada, Harris is on a three-point lead over Trump with the support of 47% registered voters. However, the two Presidential candidates are tied at 48% among likely voters of the state.
The results of the latest poll also showed that overall in the seven swing states, 37% of voters are absolutely sure they will vote for Harris—a notable change from the May 2024 survey when Biden commanded the definite support of 26% of registered voters.
In contrast, 44% of registered swing state voters said in the May poll that they would "definitely" not vote for the incumbent President.
The recentWashington Post-Schar School poll also focused on a substantial fraction of registered voters who have not yet made a final decision regarding the candidate for whom they will be casting their votes.
"With another part of the electorate locked down for a candidate for many months, this group of 'Deciders' could make the difference in an election where the battleground states could be won or lost by the narrowest of margins," reports have pointed out.
However, compared to the previous Washington Post-Schar School poll, the number of "uncommitted" voters has dropped sharply over the past few months—from 42% to 26%.
It is also notable that the majority of the "uncommitted" registered voters (43%) belong to the age group of 18 to 25.
