Amidst a largely successful Kursk incursion operation by Ukrainian forces, Russia mounted a major counteroffensive operation in the border region, with reports suggesting some gains made by Vladimir Putin's forces already.

Knewz.com has learned that Russian soldiers have managed to reclaim some of the territory lost to the Ukrainian invasion.

This is the first large-scale counterattack since the Ukrainian invasion of Kursk Oblast began in August 2024.

It has been reported that Russia has deployed several regiments along the western flank of the invading forces, including the 51st Parachute Regiment and the 155th Marine Brigade, along with aviation and artillery support.

The said regiments have reportedly made advances near the settlements of Gordeyevka, Vnezapnoye, Viktorovka, Byakhovo, Snagosti, and Apanasovka.

According to a report from the Telegram channel Two Majors, the two forces are currently engaged in active conflict over the control of the settlement of Viktorovka.

The Ukrainian open-source intelligence channel DeepState shared footage purportedly showing a column of Russian armored vehicles approaching Ukrainian invading forces from the direction of the Glushkovsky District in Kursk.

It has also been reported that Ukrainian soldiers have withdrawn from the temporarily annexed region of Korenevo – thus sending it back to the control of Russia – and that Putin's forces have started approaching in the direction of Snagost.

Russia has been able to launch the major counteroffensive operation in Kursk following a reported "worsening" of the situation on the left flank of the invading Ukrainian forces.

The Telegram channel Rybar, which reportedly has close ties to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, wrote that Putin has launched "a series of UAV and missile attacks on various targets in the enemy-controlled territory" as part of the Kursk counteroffensive.

"In the Kursk region, Russian troops launched a local counteroffensive in the Korenevsky district, starting battles in several settlements and, according to preliminary information, liberating Gordeevka and Vnezapnoe," Rybar reported.

It has been reported that one of the primary objectives of the counteroffensive mounted by Russia – especially in the Glushkovsky district on the western flank of the Ukrainian bridgehead – is to cut off supply lines and put the invading forces at a logistical disadvantage.

"It is obvious that the fighting is taking place on the western flank of the Ukrainian bridgehead. The main goal is to unblock the Glushkovsky district. The second reason why this particular location was chosen is the distance from the main supply highway, which goes through Sudzha," the Telegram channel Maps and Arrows reported.

"In theory, a Russian attack in that area could be much more dangerous - it would cut off the entire Kursk Front of Ukraine from logistics."

However, the report also pointed out that "the Ukrainian Armed Forces' defense there is obviously more reliable and there are more troops."

The channel also cited reports made by Russian milbloggers that claim that over two days of fighting, Putin's forces have already managed to liberate nine settlements in Kursk from the occupying Ukrainian soldiers.

The Ukrainian news outlet Kyiv Post offered a more precise estimate, reporting that Russia has reclaimed around 58 square miles of lost territory.

It is worth noting that the Russian counteroffensive coincided with a Ukraine-launched mammoth drone strike involving a salvo of 144 drones—an attack that has been deemed one of the largest drone strikes on Russia since the beginning of the Ukraine war.

The Defense Ministry of Russia shared a statement regarding the overnight strike on September 9, saying:

"Over the past night, when the Kyiv regime attempted to carry out a terrorist attack using unmanned aerial vehicles on targets on the territory of the Russian Federation, duty air defense systems destroyed and intercepted 144 Ukrainian aircraft-type UAVs."

"72 UAVs [were intercepted] over the territory of the Bryansk region, 20 over the territory of the Moscow region, 14 over the territory of the Kursk region, 13 over the territory of the Tula region, eight over the territory of the Belgorod region, seven over the territory of the Kaluga region, five over the territory of the Voronezh region, four over the territory of the Lipetsk region, and one over the territory of the Oryol region," the Ministry added.

The massive drone attack targeted areas in and around Moscow and reportedly resulted in the death of a 46-year-old woman and the devastation of several buildings.
