Ukraine launched a massive overnight drone strike on Russia on September 9, targeting the capital city of Moscow and other key regions with a salvo of 144 drones.
Knewz.com has learned that the attack has been deemed one of the largest drone strikes on Russia since the beginning of the Ukraine war.
The Ministry of Defense of Russia reported that air defenses intercepted 72 drones over the Bryansk region, 20 over Moscow, 14 over Kursk, 13 over Tula, and 25 more across 5 other areas.
The Ministry shared a statement about the overnight assault on Telegram, saying:
"Over the past night, when the Kyiv regime attempted to carry out a terrorist attack using unmanned aerial vehicles on targets on the territory of the Russian Federation, duty air defense systems destroyed and intercepted 144 Ukrainian aircraft-type UAVs."
"72 UAVs [were intercepted] over the territory of the Bryansk region, 20 over the territory of the Moscow region, 14 over the territory of the Kursk region, 13 over the territory of the Tula region, eight over the territory of the Belgorod region, seven over the territory of the Kaluga region, five over the territory of the Voronezh region, four over the territory of the Lipetsk region, and one over the territory of the Oryol region," the Ministry added.
According to Sergei Sobyanin, the Mayor of Moscow, the drone strike targeted several locations across the capital city, including the Domodedovo district and the areas adjacent to the Zhukovsky International Airport, around 22 miles southeast of central Moscow.
It was reported that the Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports were closed due to the overnight assault, with over 30 domestic and international flights being suspended across several Moscow City airports.
The massive drone strike led to a casualty in the city of Ramenskoye in the Moscow region, and reports mentioned the destruction of three high-story residential buildings.
Moscow Regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov confirmed in his report that the deceased individual was a 46-year-old woman, adding that three others have been hospitalized due to their injuries.
Moscow Mayor Sobyanin detailed the destruction of residences in his report on Telegram, saying:
"In the Ramenskoye city air defense district of the Ministry of Defense, two more enemy UAVs flying towards Moscow were shot down. Emergency services specialists are working at the site where the debris fell, and information about the damage is being clarified."
"Specialists are also working in the Troitsk administrative district, where UAV fragments fell on the territory of a private household. Preliminarily no casualties."
He also shared a follow-up statement, which read, "The attack by enemy UAVs continues. Another one was shot down in the urban district of Kolomna. When repelling an attack in the city of Ramenskoye, a fire broke out on the 11th-12th floor of a residential building. Emergency services are working."
"The consequences of falling fragments from a downed UAV in the area of Zhukovsky airport are also being eliminated."
It was reported by the Telegram channel ASTRA that all three affected residential buildings in Ramenskoye caught fire as a result of the attack, but emergency services were able to subsequently bring the situation under control.
The pro-Russian Telegram channel Mash shared footage purportedly showing one of the aircraft-type UAVs – described by the outlet as a "Fierce" type UAV – flying over the village of Prudki in Ramenskoye district.
"This [drone] was among a swarm of drones, most of which were shot down by air defense. The flight range of the 'Fierce' is approximately 1000 kilometers [around 621 miles], and the combat load is 50 kilograms [around 110 pounds] of explosives," Mash further wrote.
It has been reported that the cities of Kolomna and Kashyra in the Moscow Oblast were also affected by falling debris from the drones launched by Ukraine. While there have been no casualties or injuries, City District Head Mikhail Shuvalov wrote that an apartment building and a preschool department were damaged as a result of the attack.
"Tonight, UAV debris fell on the territory of Gorky and Lugovaya streets in Kashira-1. The glazing of a preschool department and a residential building in the private sector was damaged by shrapnel. There were no other injuries or casualties. Emergency service personnel are on the scene," Shuvalov reported.
It is worth noting that the drone strike on Moscow came right on the heels of a Russian airstrike on Ukraine over the weekend involving rockets, missiles, and artillery shells.
According to reports, the airstrike on Sunday, September 8, left seven people dead across Ukraine.
Two people have reportedly died as a result of the airstrike in the city of Sumy in Northeast Ukraine, with four others injured—including children.
It was also reported that a separate airstrike on the Donetsk region late Saturday and early Sunday claimed the lives of four more. In Kharkiv, the airstrikes left one dead and injured 10 others.
