Following what has been dubbed Ukraine's “largest” drone attack on the Moscow region, new visuals have surfaced depicting a raging inferno at a Vladimir Putin oil depot.
Knewz.com has learned that this attack, which has since been dubbed one of the defending country’s most successful since the start of the war, destroyed 22 oil storage tanks.
The fire has drawn an estimated 520 emergency workers to the location, but the flames continue to burn with intermittent explosions echoing through the stricken plant.
Locals in the areas surrounding the plant have since complained of noxious gasses in the air.
This blaze was triggered by a drone attack on August 18, and has been burning since. The initial response to the fire hailed from Rostov Oblast Governor Vasily Golubev.
His assessment of the event read:
“In the southeast of the Rostov region, air defense forces also repelled a UAV attack.”
“As a result of falling debris on the territory of industrial warehouses in Proletarsk, a diesel fuel fire occurred. Firefighting units are involved in extinguishing the fire.”
In a later update, he stated:
“At 05:35, due to a second UAV strike, extinguishing the fire at the industrial base in Proletarsk was difficult.”
The Ukrainian General Staff later claimed responsibility for the attack on Facebook, saying:
“The Defense Forces of Ukraine struck another important object of Russian invaders.”
“On the night of August 18, there was an attack on the Caucasus compound in the Rostov region of the Russian Federation. Oil and petroleum products, which were supplied also and for the needs of the Russian occupation army were stored here.”
“The task was accomplished by the forces and means of the Main Intelligence Department of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in interaction with the Armed Forces and other components of the Defense Forces of Ukraine,” the post continued.
The update pointed out that the attack was part of a bid to “undermine the military-economic potential” of the Kremlin.
On August 20, additional reports indicated that the blaze was taking a toll on the embroiled emergency services, and had at that point hospitalized 13 firemen.
This attack follows an earlier article by Knewz.com on what the Russian military establishment has dubbed Ukraine’s largest drone attack on the Moscow region ever. Said organization claimed to have shot down 44 UAVs, 11 of which ventured close to the capital city.
Rostov Mayor, Vasily Golubev, mirrored the report with a statement on Telegram:
“Two more drones flying towards Moscow were shot down. The created layered defense of Moscow from enemy UAVs made it possible to successfully repel all attacks. The air defense forces of the Ministry of Defense shot down 10 units this night. This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones of all time.”
Ukraine's Military Intelligence has since acknowledged responsibility for said barrage with Chief of Division Kyrylo Budanov, claiming that 50 drones had targeted a signals intelligence center near Moscow, a nearby Ostafyevo airport, and the Rostov region’s Millerovo military airbase.
