One of the United Kingdom’s decorated nuclear-driven submarine captains has been sacked for making an X-rated video and sharing it with a subordinate while at sea.
Knewz.com has learned that while on board – the unnamed commander who was also responsible for the Trident II submarine-launched nuclear missile array – was embroiled in an illicit relationship with an underling.
When the news first came to the attention of the British Naval seniors, the captain was stripped of his position as a commander of the Vanguard Class submarine and confined to a desk.
The military organization has since indicated that the affair leading up to the commander’s ultimate sacking did not form part of its investigation.
Notably, the officer was one of the UK’s youngest submarine captains and rose to the responsibility of overseeing the nuclear missiles after he completed the country’s taxing Perisher course.
The Royal Navy has since released a statement saying:
“All forms of unacceptable behavior are taken extremely seriously and anything which falls short of the highest standards will not be tolerated. Anyone who is found culpable will be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their rank or status.”
Despite this alleged attitude of zero tolerance, the country’s marine forces appear to be riddled with scandals of unprofessional relationships.
In February 2024, an officer also working on a Vanguard Class submarine was accused of being a sex pest. This individual, according to allegations, even went as far as placing his gender in a female sublieunent’s pocket.
The individual was tipped off to the military police and a case of bullying and sexual harassment was opened.
This behavior, however, comes after the officer served tenures at the helms of two previous vessels; the HMS Vengeance and HMS Vigilant.
The latter of the two (before the shamed officer took charge) made a call to the United States. Upon return, nine of its sailors failed drug tests earning it the moniker HMS Sex and Cocaine.
In another instance (in 2017) Commander Stuart Armstrong, 41, was accused of having an affair with a newly qualified Sub-Lieutenant Rebecca Edwards, 25.
Edwards caught the attention of other crew members when after a few beers in a mess hall she donned her high-ranking paramour’s epaulets and jokingly barked orders at her colleagues.
Not everybody was impressed and five servicemen threatened to resign over what was perceived a contravention of the organization’s no-touching rule.
As a result of the ensuing investigation, Commander Stuart Armstrong was relieved of his duties while Edwards faced a fine and demotion.
These scandals come at a time when the UK’s submarine force is beset by problems.
Knewz.com reported United Kingdom’s Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, lamented the state of its underwater military capacity claiming that five of the country’s most cutting-edge submarines (Astute Class) were and would be in dry docks for the foreseeable future.
“It leaves British waters spectacularly exposed. The best thing to fight a sub is a sub,” Radakin complained.
“The Navy is reaping the whirlwind for a failure to make decisions earlier.”
