Fact: the form of a mascara wand greatly influences its function and your final eyelash look. So which shape should you grab when your goal is super-voluminous lashes without lots of clumps? A fluffy wand with an hourglass-shaped brush, like the e.l.f. Cosmetics Big Mood Mascara ($7), is a solid bet.

The e.l.f. Cosmetics brush, in particular, features intertwined tiny bristles that are designed to catch-hold each individual lash, separate them from each other, then coat them with a ton of pigment. Because the bristles evenly distribute the pigment and define each lash, the mascara allows you to create a more voluminous, fuller look without a ton of clumping.

That hourglass curve in the brush plays a really important part in the lash look you end up with, too. It allows you to really hug the root of your eyelashes and swipe the pigment all the way through, offering a lengthening and subtle lifting effect. If you want even more of a bend, I recommend curling your eyelashes before swiping on your mascara.

I personally find that it allows me to address the inner corners, center, and outer corners of my eyelashes without smearing any product on my skin. (I focus on one of those areas at a time in order to get a look that mimics a pair of falsies.)

Of course, a brush is only as good as the mascara formula. The Big Mood Mascara's pigment features jojoba wax to give your look a hold and also create a smooth finish without any flaking.
