Going through a breakup? Over your long hair? In need of a change? We've got a solution for you in the form of this season's hottest new hairstyle: the "heartthrob bob." If you haven't heard of it yet by name, chances are you've seen the look all over social media — it's a voluminous cut that was most often worn by '90s celebrity teens who a lot of us had crushes on at the time (hence the name).
"This new bob is really a take on [the] schoolboy or cool-boy cut from back in the day," says celebrity hairstylist Garren. Think of your favorite '90s heartthrobs: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and the Hanson Brothers.

What Is the Heartthrob Bob?
The look is typically blunt cut, landing just below the hairline. "In the back, it has subtle layering," Garren says. "The front is very blunt and square and leads to a slight layering on the top, like long curtain bangs, so it blends with the one-length look."
According to hairstylist David Reid, it should be piece-y and disheveled with a center part that's off the face. "It incorporates these design principles, a gender fluid nuance, and effortless 'lived in' styling."
The bob is versatile, but hairstylist Aaron Grenia notes that it works great on those with oval, heart, and square-shaped faces, which will benefit most from the face-framing layers. "It's ideal for medium to thick hair, as the layers add movement and prevent the cut from looking too heavy." Also, although the cut can be adapted for curly textures with some additional shaping, it does work on straight to wavy hair.
How to Get the Heartthrob Bob
If you're ready to book your salon appointment and need to know what to ask your stylist, don't worry — we've got you covered. "Request a jaw-length bob with soft, feathery layers to create movement," Grenia says. "Ask for longer front sections that frame the face and subtle shaping around the jawline." Then, if you want to make sure your hair is ultra easy to style once you're home, Grenia says that you should mention razor-cut or textured ends for a more undone finish. Of course, arriving at the salon with inspiration photos in hand will always help.
You should also know that this cut requires in-salon maintenance every six to eight weeks. "As it grows out, it should morph into a nice shape," Garden says. "When it starts flipping out and doing weird things, you'll have to get a haircut again."
How to Style the Heartthrob Bob
You'll want to start with a quality shampoo and conditioner like the R+Co Bleu Essential Shampoo ($49) and the R+Co Bleu Essential Conditioner ($49).
If you're looking for a quick and easy wash-and-go hack, Reid says you can opt to style this look just by air drying it and adding a tiny bit of volume using the Thank God It's Natural Miracle Styling Multi-Use Setting Foam ($13).
If you're looking for a routine that's a bit more involved, Grenia says to start out with a heat protectant like the IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray ($38) before using a round brush and a blow dryer to curve the ends outward.
One final tip from Reid? "Remember, it's a vibe, a style that you'll want to run your hands through as you flirt your way through the day."
Classic Heartthrob Bob
The classic heartthrob bob features a blunt cut that lands underneath the ears with face-framing curtain bangs. It works best on straight to wavy hair, but it can be customized for different hair types.
Heartthrob Bob With Short Bangs
Although it's most common to see heartthrob bobs with longer curtain bangs, the trend also works with shorter bangs, especially if you part them down the middle.
Wavy Heartthrob Bob
If you have a natural wave to your hair, the heartthrob bob is perfect as a wash-and-go style. You can add in a little texturizing product and then let it air dry.
Sleek Heartthrob Bob
This sleek heartthrob bob features a blunt cut with face-framing curtain bangs. This example doesn't have a ton of volume or feature flipped out ends, so it's more pared down version of the trend.
Layered Heartthrob Bob
If you like a lot of layers, you can always incorporate them into this trend. If you opt for shorter layers around the head, you'll garner a lot more volume at your roots.
Side-Swept Heartthrob Bob
Although this trend is most often seen with a middle part, it can be styled with a side-swept bang. The flipped-in layers are perfect to top off the look.
