MissDarcei's Go-To Makeup, From a Drugstore Mascara to That Viral Foundation
The Expert Edit features interviews with specialists about the products they swear by in their chosen field. For the latest installment, we spoke to beauty influencer Darcei Giles about her product recommendations.
Darcei Giles, better known as MissDarcei, has been creating beauty content on YouTube since 2010. Having garnered close to four million subscribers, she's become known for her series "Black Girl Tries," which was started in 2018 to test makeup styles that Black people typically don't get to participate in. "At the time, the trend was to follow other creators' makeup tutorials, but everyone was following the tutorial of someone who looked like them," Giles tells PS. "I decided to do the opposite and followed the tutorial of a Korean makeup artist."
"Content creators do have a voice and we do have real influence."
Giles has always been a lover of Korean beauty brands, so when she showed up to a TIRTIR event where guests were going home with nine foundation shades — none of which matched her skin color — she gladly accepted the gifting. "When I got home, I decided to try the foundation anyway and I loved the formula, so I made a video asking the brand, if they ever decided to make my shade or darker, [to] call me."
Not only did the reel go viral, TIRTIR contacted Giles to partner with her on a new launch that included her shade. "This was a monumental moment in the beauty industry because this was the first time a brand actually answered the call of inclusion. This moment proved that content creators do have a voice and we do have real influence," she says.
Giles and TIRTIR now work together to prioritize inclusivity and expand diversity, and other companies have taken note. She maintains that her perseverance in consistency got her to where she is today, with a huge following that trusts her guidance and makeup recommendations. "It's cliche, but be yourself. My weird interests got me where I am. It's boring to try to be someone else. Even if someone is successful, you can't become successful by being a copy of them. You have to do things your own way," she says.
Beyond sampling makeup to fine-tune her favorite beauty products, Giles also spends a significant portion of her day regulating her nervous system by working out, practicing breathing exercises, and going for walks. Ahead, she shares her go-to picks with PS for makeup and skin-care, ranging from basic, affordable must haves to tried-and-true investment buys that she can't live without.

Makeup Puffs
Pimoys Powder Puff Face Soft Triangle Makeup Puff ($7)
"These are my favorite puffs for applying powder to touch up my makeup," Giles tells PS. "I always have one in my purse to help touch up my foundation and absorb any excess oils on my face. They're super convenient and easy to wash."
The triangle shape is purposeful and beneficial to your makeup routine. When you apply foundation to your cheeks and forehead, you're meant to use the round side, whereas you can use the point for eye and contouring.

Lifting Mascara
L'Oréal Paris Telescopic Lift Washable Mascara ($11, originally $15)
Giles maintains that this mascara lifts the way it promises. "I have short lashes that never stay up unless I'm using this mascara," she says. "It's the only one I've found that really works perfectly for me." It has a double-hook bristle brush that coats every lash for long, defined lashes that don't smudge.
The brand suggests lifting first with the front hook bristles to length, swiping from root to tip, and then using the side hook to comb and define lashes. The product is ophthalmologist tested and formaldehyde-free.

Best for those who experience dryness, redness, and uneven texture, the antioxidant-rich product is vegan.
The 100 percent grape water is what delivers intense hydration and a soothing sensation, according to the brand.

"This is a Black girl staple for a reason," Giles says. "It's the perfect brown liner that will turn any ashy lipstick into a gorgeous, natural lip color."
Famously praised by professional makeup artists, the pencil has a smooth and creamy texture that supports in drawing the perfect line without drags or skips. Other popular shades include Oak (a beige-brown) and Caviar (black), and you can use it with an additional lipstick or gloss, or without.

TIRTIR Foundation
TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion Foundation ($25)
Giles is the face of K-beauty brand TIRTIR, which she deems her greatest career accomplishment thus far. "It made such an impact on the beauty community as a whole. A Black woman has never been the face of a K-Beauty brand until now. Honestly, it is something I didn't think would ever happen, but I'm happy it did," she says, explaining that she relies on this foundation most prominently during the winter months, when she wants her skin to look smooth and matte.
"[It] literally makes your face look like a filter. A revolutionary product in the Korean beauty industry that everyone should support." This foundation is the first in the Korean beauty space offering 40 different shades, largely thanks to Giles's influence.

Setting Spray
Morphe Jumbo Continuous Setting Spray ($25)
"This setting spray keeps my makeup from looking dry and cakey after I apply powder," she says. "It helps blend all the products on my face, leaving a skin-like finish and my face looks glowy, but not shiny." The ingredients of this spray include vitamin E, vitamin B5, and fruit extracts. You should hold it eight to 10 inches away from your face during use, right after you've finished your makeup.

Curl-Defining Cream
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna The Homecurl Curl-Defining Styling Cream ($28)
"The Fenty curl cream is my new best friend," Giles says. "Having curly hair means you use a million different products, but Homecurl makes it a one-step styling precess, which I love. It's great for everyday use and super fast and easy to apply — which is great when typically it takes me hours to do my hair. Saving time is essential."
While the product works well with all hair textures, it's particularly compatible with damaged ends and helps to tame frizz and flyaways.

Nude Lip Gloss
Hera Sensual Nude Gloss ($36)
"This is my current every day lip gloss. It's sheer, but leaves the perfect wash of color on your lips and it's not sticky. Plus, these shades work on everyone." It's notably a favorite product of K-pop star Jennie Kim and is meant to help you achieve voluptuous, fuller-looking lips, according to the brand.
The transparent formula is available in five different shades and provides a "flush," without an actual swipe of pigment.
