6 Winter Haircut Trends to Inspire You, From Prada Bobs to Pixies
Winter lingers for months after the holiday season wraps, which feels like a cruel twist of fate. After all, there is such an emphasis on the glam of holiday hairstyles that we forget that life continues after the ball drops. But this post-holiday stretch, according to hair experts, is when the real haircut transformations begin — and this winter, we're chopping it all off.
"Shorter styles are a big trend this winter because they're easy to style and take less time to blowout," says hairstylist Donavin Maxwell. And if Emma Stone's Golden Globes pixie debut was any indicator, the shorter, the better.
Not ready for a dramatic chop? Test the waters with a change in your fringe. "Many of my clients are asking for soft, wispy curtain bangs," Maxwell says, noting the new year uptick in requests for bangs. Or, use this bundle-up time to prioritize hair growth and opt for long layers that can withstand minimal maintenance.
Ahead, celebrity hairstylists are dishing out the best winter haircut trends, from chic bobs to mermaid cuts, to help inspire your fresh start.

Itty Bitty Pixie Haircut
Will 2025 be the year of the pixie? All signs point to yes with celebs like Janelle James, Emma Stone, and Quinta Brunson sporting the itty bitty cut at the 2025 Golden Globes (aka the opening ceremony of awards season). Since pixies are nuanced cuts, Maxwell advises working with your hairstylist to customize the shape according to your anatomy and styling habits. "Ask for a modern pixie cut tailored to your face shape and lifestyle — one with a soft, piecey texture that doesn't require much effort to maintain," Maxwell says.
Maxwell adds that a good texturizing spray is crucial to achieving the piece-y effect at home, and suggests the Fekkai Full Blown Volume Dry Texturizing Spray ($27) for day-to-day maintenance. "It's quick, easy, and keeps the look chic and current."

Prada Bob Haircut
"I'm known for my iconic 'Prada Bob,' as seen on Joey King and Meredith Duxbury, and trust me — this look will dominate 2025," celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos predicts for the upcoming year. "Effortlessly chic bobs are low-maintenance and nod to old Hollywood glamour, perfectly framing and enhancing facial features."
You may be asking, what is a Prada bob? Giannetos explains the look as "a blunt bob that swoops inward and gives an asymmetric look with the side part." It works on any hair type, making it a universally-flattering choice for winter.

Mermaid Layer Haircut
Given its usual summer connotations, any style with the word "mermaid" might seem like an unusual choice for the depths of winter — but Giannetos says it's a perennial style option for long hair. "If you love your long locks and want to enhance them, the mermaid cut may be ideal for you," he adds.
"The key to this look is long layers. It's all about movement and adding dimension to the hair. Ask your stylist to softly frame your face and keep the layers long," Giannetos says. "And if you have naturally wavy hair, it will be easy to style yourself at home." We love a low-maintenance moment.

Turtleneck Bob Haircut
The French bob haircut was made for romanticizing life and people watching from within the warmth of a coffee shop. It's also a smart sartorial choice for winter: "It pairs beautifully with chunky sweaters and turtlenecks, making it a cozy yet stylish option for the season," says Maxwell. After all, the turtleneck-grazing length of a French bob just makes sense.
"When visiting your stylist, be clear about where you want the bob to hit — whether at the jawline or slightly above. This precision ensures a fresh, flattering shape," Maxwell says. The NYC stylist also recommends keeping a small round brush or curling iron (we love T3's 1" Singlepass Curl X ($150)) on hand to create a tousled, natural finish.

Wispy Curtain Bangs
For those looking to make a change that's not too major (baby steps!), Giannetos offers up bangs as an entryway. "Curtain bangs are a great fringe style to transition your look. The look is not too blunt, effortlessly chic, blends nicely with your style, and helps frame the face," says Giannetos. It's a sentiment Maxwell echoes: "Wispy curtain bangs are my go-to bangs this winter. They add a flirty, sexy touch to any hairstyle, and their versatility works with almost any length or texture."
For styling curtain bangs at home, Giannetos suggests adding "a Velcro roller to the bangs while blow-drying to create volume and a soft, bouncy finish." The grip of Velcro rollers will help keep your wispy fringe in place while adding lift at the root.

Messy Lob Haircut
Not too long, not too short, the long bob — also known as a lob — is the Goldilocks length for haircuts. "I love a lob in winter. This length is practical when wearing scarfs to avoid knots or tangling," says Maxwell.
To set this cut apart from its lob predecessors (like the famed tousled lob of the 2010s), Maxwell suggests modernizing the look with messy styling. "My biggest prediction for hair trends in 2025 is messy, effortless hair," Maxwell says. Grab a soft styling balm, like REVERIE's Rake Styling Balm ($36), to add flexible texture to ends and experiment with swapping center parts for deep side parts.
