I Found the Elusive "Cool Socks" All the Trendy Kids Are Wearing

Hanes Women Ultimate Comfort Toe Seamed Ankle Socks ($9-$18)

I know these are called ankle socks, but they're not — they're quarter socks. These have been my go-tos for a better part of the year, and I love them because they hit at the right height, they don't sag or twist throughout the day, they're not too thick or too thin, and they're an affordable price point. They've also held up great to frequent wear, without developing holes — but my frequent (and not-at-all-careful) washing has led to some pilling and dinginess.

Adidas Women's Cushioned Quarter Socks ($12-$16)

If you're OK with a logo, this Adidas option is fantastic. The cushioning and arch compression really does make a difference when you're walking long distances or working out, and they're perfectly thin without being flimsy. One Amazon reviewer (not me) even said: "These are the perfect socks if you don't want the Gen Zers to know you're old! These are super comfy and true to size!" (Gen Z will know. But at least they'll think you have good style?)

Old Navy Quarter Crew Socks 3-Pack for Women ($6, originally $10)

These Old Navy socks are a a little on the thin side, but they're super affordable, which makes a difference if you tend to wear socks hard (I do) and want to stock up on several packs without hurting your wallet. The white pair has a subtle ribbing, which looks cute with a put-together outfit, but a little out of place with athleisure. You can also opt for a non-ribbed, patterned option.

Hue Mini Crew Sock ($17, originally $18)

"Mini crew" is just another term for quarter sock, apparently. These are actually a bit taller than a true quarter sock, which makes them great for a slightly scrunched down look. They've become a staple in my rotation. They're simple and they hold up very well to repeated washes; they're also breathable enough to wear during the summer, while still being sturdy.

Lululemon Women's Daily Stride Quarter Socks ($18)

These are at a typical Lululemon price point, but if you need help justifying spending $18 on a pair of socks, here you go: they offer 360-degree arch support, and each sock in the pair is constructed specifically for your left or right foot for the ultimate comfortable fit.

Madewell Three-Pack Slinky Ankle Socks ($25)

I personally love a ribbed sock, and these ankle-length socks from Madewell deliver. The wide cuff, subtle ribbing, and neutral colorways make these wearable with shoes other than sneakers, as well as a wide range of outfit types — though they wouldn't look at home with an athleisure fit.

Aritzia Best-Ever Ankle Sock 5-Pack ($28)

Aritzia calls these ankle socks, but they fall at a decidedly quarter length. I haven't tried these myself, but they've got a seamless toe and are made from soft-brushed cotton. I wouldn't wear them to work out in, but would definitely slip them on under sneakers for an everyday look.

Bombas Women's Quarter Socks ($14)

Bombas loyalists, rise up. The brand has a fantastic quarter-sock option for workouts or casual Sunday 'fits. The material is a little on the thicker end, but that means you don't have to worry about wearing through the toes or heel. And, of course, the brand donates a pair of socks for every one you purchase.
