At some point, my TikTok algorithm decided I might be magnesium deficient. To get the facts and put my curiosity to rest, I turned to Jillian Kubala, MS, RD, a registered dietitian based in Westhampton, NY.

Let's start with the basics. "Magnesium is an essential mineral, meaning your body can't make it on its own, and you must obtain it through your diet or supplementation," Kubala explains. "It's needed for blood sugar and blood pressure regulation, muscle contraction, stress regulation, nerve function, DNA synthesis, and many other important processes, so it's important to take in magnesium-rich foods or supplements on a daily basis."

Here's where things get tricky: "Even though magnesium is found in many foods, such as beans and vegetables, many people don't take in enough magnesium to maintain optimal blood levels. Most people can benefit from a magnesium supplement, especially those who follow diets low in plant foods, those with high blood sugar and blood pressure levels, and people with high and/or anxiety stress levels."

As with all supplements, it's important to manage expectations; it's not a cure-all. "Though magnesium supplements have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels in certain populations, they're not a magic bullet when it comes to reducing stress or treating mental health conditions," Kubala adds. She also notes that magnesium is "generally considered safe and not associated with many adverse side effects," though consulting a medical provider is crucial to ensure it's the right choice for you.
