So when is it actually flu season? You can catch the flu anytime, but the virus circulates more during fall and winter, with flu activity peaks between December and February. As a nurse who has taken care of patients with influenza in the hospital, I've seen how the virus can cause serious health complications. If you haven't already, there's still time to book your flu shot to protect you and your loved ones.

In case you do get the flu, antiviral medications are available with a prescription. These usually have to be taken within one to two days after symptoms begin to get the best results. If you're at high risk for severe illness and have flu symptoms, it's recommended that you receive prompt treatment with antivirals. However, if you generally have good health, the flu can usually be managed with simple strategies such as plenty of rest, fluids, and symptom management.

The next time you shop online or in-store at your local CVS for health and wellness products, check out the following items to keep on hand to fight the flu.

It has a two-second reading, 50 memory recalls, and different colors for normal, mild, and high readings. Just make sure to follow the manufacturer's directions on how to take the temperature correctly.

Acetaminophen

CVS Health Extra Strength Acetaminophen Pain Reliever & Fever Reducer ($10)

It sounds like a long name, but it's really just the generic name for Tylenol, which can be used to reduce pain and fever. When using acetaminophen, be mindful that you do not exceed the recommended dose. It's also a popular active ingredient in many combination drugs, so check if your other medications have it, and don't go over the maximum dose.

04
Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen

CVS Health Ibuprofen Pain Reliever & Fever Reducer ($7)

Ibuprofen is an NSAID that can also be used to reduce pain and fever. It works in the body in a different way than acetaminophen, so it's not the same thing. Ibuprofen comes with several warnings and contraindications, so read them carefully. If you have a persistently high fever that doesn't come down with fever reducers, it may be time to check in with a healthcare provider.

Disinfecting Wipes

Total Home Disinfectant Wipe Multi-Pack ($9)

Influenza mainly spreads through droplets. This can happen when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes around others. Sometimes, it can also spread through surfaces, such as when a person touches a contaminated object and touches their face. If you live around people, keeping these wipes around may be a good idea.
