"Monkey Man" Actress Sobhita Dhulipala Shares Her Must-Have Products
Dev Patel's "Monkey Man" made its premiere at the 2024 South by Southwest Festival, and it impressed critics and action/thriller lovers alike. Not only is it Patel's directorial debut, but it's also the first Hollywood role for breakout star Sobhita Dhulipala. The Indian actress and supermodel auditioned for the role of Sita in 2016, early on in her career. "I got a call back, I met Dev, and I could see how much this story meant to him and how involved he was in every aspect of the film coming together," Dhulipala tells PS. "I respect that passion and dedication — and about a good four or five years after that is when I get another call saying, 'Hey, this film's happening finally.'"
Although the movie hit a few roadblocks in the production stage, it's now a worldwide success, thanks to gritty action sequences and compelling storytelling. "My joy was in the making of it," she says. "When we were shooting it in those challenging circumstances, that was like the zenith for me in this experience, not the release. It's just such a beautiful feeling to be picked by a first-time filmmaker, to be part of their vision. I had faith in his sincerity, in his passion, and in his honesty in wanting to tell a story with all his heart. There was no reason to not do it."
Dhulipala often plays characters who are complex, and she enjoys it. "With Sita, there was a vulnerability but also strength. There was beauty but also grief. She was so many opposite things coming together, and that always makes for an interesting character. We are a mix of many things, so to meet a character at a time in her life when she's at the cusp of something dramatic that's about to happen, she's about to break free and fly out of it, I thought there was a certain beauty to her beyond what meets the eye, and I was drawn to it."
For those interested in diving into Indian cinema after watching "Monkey Man," Dhulipala recommends watching "Jallikattu" and "Manjummel Boys," which are two Malayalam-language films inspired by rural stories. She also recommends Amazon Prime Video's "Made In Heaven," in which she stars as a wedding planner. "While [the series] throws light on the dichotomy of the whole marriage as an institution and the trade aspect of it, the sentiment of a wedding is universal. The anxieties around it, the excitement about it: that's something everyone in the world can resonate with. The characters are complex, and there's a lot of grayness but also so much to root for."
Dhulipala's onscreen presence is nothing short of mesmerizing, and her personal style is just as timeless, effortless, and elegant. With each red carpet look, she cements herself as a force in fashion — and she cites India's style legacy as inspiration. "India has this incredibly rich history of textile, print, embroidery, and so much history in terms of the different rulers and leaders and their influences and music and literature," she explains. "It is like this melting pot through time that has constantly churned out great iconic style legacies. So I draw major inspiration from that legacy and heritage, and I think I like my red carpet style to be monolithic, strong, silent, and big."
Dhulipala is also one of the few Indian celebrities who embraces her natural, thick curls. "When I wake up, I wash my hair, I sit at home, I look at myself in the mirror and I see this mane of hair. Why do I need to tame it? Why do I need to make it obey? I don't need to. It's like my crown, so I just accept."
Ahead, Dhulipala shares some of her current must-have products, including her favorite hair oil, perfume, coffee, and more.

Sobhita Dhulipala's Affordable Must Have
"Coconut oil is a cultural and childhood thing. From taming hair to rashes to self-massages to skin hydration needs, a solid bottle of cold-pressed coconut oil is a staple," Dhulipala says. She's currently using the Forest Essentials Organic Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil ($14-$27).
She likes to massage a bit of coconut oil on her scalp to help keep her head cool and to condition her hair. She grew up viewing the task of oiling her hair as a form of self-care. "It's something I've done on days when I'm feeling a little tired or have a bit of a headache," she says.

Sobhita Dhulipala's Investment Must Have
Dhulipala likes wearing light, fruity, or floral fragrances in the morning and deeper notes in the evenings or for special occasions. Her current go-to scent is the Diptyque Paris Oud Palao Eau de parfum ($230).
"I love Oud. The smell is complex, it's rich, and there's a certain woody nature-esque smell to it, which I enjoy," she says. Besides oud, this perfume has notes of rose, vanilla, and incense. "It adds a layer of finesse. There's a sophistication to scents that are complex. They age differently on everybody's skin, and I like the way this ages on me. I feel feminine and womanly."

Sobhita Dhulipala's Morning Routine Must Have
Dhulipala starts her mornings with a strong black coffee with a spoonful of ghee, which is clarified butter. "The ghee sort of lines your stomach nicely and helps you sustain the energy for a bit," she says. "If I have just a black coffee first thing in my stomach, it feels a bit acidic."
Making her cup of morning coffee is a relaxing ritual for Dhulipala. She freshly grinds whole coffee beans, like the Lavazza Espresso Whole Bean Coffee Blend, Medium Roast ($15), and takes a moment to herself as she sips her brew before preparing for the day. "There are times when maybe I don't have access to ghee, in which case the same coconut oil that I used to my hair or my skin, I put in my coffee," she says.

Sobhita Dhulipala's Sleep Must Have
After noticing her lips becoming sensitive to harsher environments while on shoots, Dhulipala turned to a tub of classic Vaseline Original Petroleum Jelly ($5, originally $6).
"To this day, when I use certain lip products, like some pigments or certain brands, I tend to have a little bit of inflammation or flaking. I just want to use something that I know is super basic, uncomplicated, and foolproof," she says. Dhulipala can depend on Vaseline as a clean, fuss-free option to create a protective barrier on her lips. "I just felt like sticking to these basics is just the best way to go because often I am either shooting or have to go to events or appearances where I don't really have the time to let the skin recover or heal. It's just best to stick to one thing that I know is a fix."

Sobhita Dhulipala's Travel Must Have
Dhulipala likes to compartmentalize her travel necessities like toiletries with a set of organizers and pouches from Muji, like the Muji TPU Clear Case ($10). "I bought them a while back, and I really like them. I don't really see any fault with it, so I just stick with it," she says. Dhulipala appreciates how durable and long-lasting these cases are, revealing that they go with her everywhere.
Dhulipala's biggest travel tip: "Don't stack your clothes, roll them." She likes to travel light and recommends sticking to core wardrobe essentials like neutrals that you can style and pair for a wide range of looks. "My styling happens when I'm packing. [I think] 'If I pack these neutrals, and add in little more interesting pieces, how can I combine them to create different combinations that can give me a variety of looks and I can enjoy it?' I mix and match, pair, and create full-blown looks with fewer pieces."
