"Taylor Swift Style" Author Sarah Chapelle Lists Her 8 Swift-Coded Must Haves
The Expert Edit features interviews with specialists about the products they swear by in their chosen field. For the latest installment, we spoke to Sarah Chapelle of Taylor Swift Styled about her new book that archives the star's fashion moments, as well as her personal must haves and product recommendations for Swifties.
Writer and author of "Taylor Swift Style" Sarah Chapelle has been a fan of Swift's since 2006, but started documenting the singer's clothing details in 2011. "I was a news reporter in a past life and I feel uniquely qualified to be an expert source on her style evolution as a journalist and recorder of her fashion history — and also as a real, true fan," she tells PS. While Swift's red carpet appearances were obviously captured far and wide, Chapelle aimed to focus on the in-between street style moments and concert outfits that felt more relatable.
"I feel uniquely qualified to be an expert source on [Taylor Swift's] style evolution as a journalist and recorder of her fashion history — and also as a real, true fan.
What may surprise some folks is that her blog began simply with photos, without the "critically kind" commentary she's known for today. Now, her community relies on her to break down not just the designer credits behind Swift's looks, but the connection between the aesthetic and what that might imply about Swift's upcoming projects. "[I approach] what I say with a careful degree of intent and critical thinking, while also delivering critique of any kind with kindness, and never malice," Chapelle explains. "I wanted to create a space where people with shared passions could also share their differing points of view without fear of retribution or cruelty."
Chapelle has extended that golden rule to her newly-released book, which comes at the perfect time. "Taylor has truly had a meteoric last few years, between the success of her back-to-back pandemic albums, winning her fourth Grammy album of the year for 'Midnights,' and the record-breaking success of the Eras Tour underlining her efforts to re-record her back catalogue. Interest in her has never been higher," Chapelle says. "This book provides opportunity to catch up new fans on her visual legacy and also gives older fans this beautifully, lovingly packaged book that definitively walks through some of our fondest memories of the last two decades of her career. I think there's something in it for everyone."
Chapelle hopes the book will make it to a bestsellers list and is optimistic thanks to her passionate and supportive community. "When you put out the energy and the call for people who are inherently good, kind, and passionate about their interests, I think those people find you in return," she says of her followers.
Ahead, Chapelle shares her personal day-to-day essentials for writing, some of which are naturally connected to Swift. Hilariously, her favorite is the fleece cat onesie Swift was gifted during a 2014 SiriusXM interview. Yes, Chapelle owns one too, though it's sadly no longer available. "It's one of my silliest things I love to pull out in the winter when I want to be extra cozy," she says.

Taylor Swift Style: Fashion Through the Eras
Taylor Swift Style: Fashion Through the Eras ($24, originally $35)
"Taylor Swift Style" explains the "why" behind the outfits Swift has worn — or "the stylish Easter eggs and deeper meanings of one of the most savvy pop stars of the modern age," according to Chapelle. It includes over 200 photographs of Swift's fashionable moments through gilded pages of extensive research.
Chapelle is about to embark on a sold out book tour across the US and Canada to meet her community and sign copies of the text. "I wanted to write something that was truly authentic and earnest from the fan experience," she says. "This book is a love letter to her music and style evolution from someone who can provide historical context with a lot of care. I really hope people pick up on that in every word."

Fine Point Pen
Marvy Uchida Le Pen in Green ($17)
"I discovered these when I headed to my local stationary store in search of the perfect green pen to sign copies of 'Taylor Swift Style' ahead of my sold out book tour," Chapelle explains. "This dark green color was the perfect match for the spine of my book and it dries instantly for no smudges." The brand's pens are known for a delicate touch, plus they're acid-free and non-toxic.

Coffee Mug
Fellow Carter Move Travel Mug ($30)
"Naturally, coffee was a lifeline when writing this book," Chapelle says. "I like to nurse my drink for hours upon hours, so having something that will keep it warm is imperative for me. Bonus is that this one looks good." The Fellow mug has a vacuum-insulated, stainless steel interior and can hold 12 ounces of liquid. It has a built-in splash guard for no spills, and it's dishwasher safe. It retains heat for 12 hours and keeps beverages cold for 24.

Candle
Boy Smells Hinoki Fantôme Candle ($48)
"I like to create a cozy, embracing atmosphere when I'm writing so I almost always have a candle lit," Chapelle says. "Boy Smells makes some of the most unusual and inspiring candle scent profiles of any brand I've ever known. Their Cowboy Kush, Hinoki Fantôme, and Slow Burn scents are among my favorites. I love a scent that's spicy, woodsy, and nuanced. Boy Smells does that better than anyone else."
The brand crafts its candles without parabens or phthalates and they all have a burn time of up to 50 hours. This particular scent is described by the brand as "a playful traipse through ancient forests — a dangerous fairytale with a love-sick ending." It has notes of vibrant Hinoki timber, floral jasmine, amber, and spice.

Popflex Leggings
Popflex Supersculpt Leggings With Pockets ($60)
Chapelle is a regular gym goer, explaining to PS that her workouts involving weight training and the elliptical — or even a Megaformer Pilates or dance class — keep her sane. Her choice in workout clothes? The Swift-approved brand Popflex — specifically the Supersculpt Leggings. "If it's good enough for Eras Tour rehearsals, it's definitely good enough for my regular gym workouts. Like writing, exercise is another form of a personal 'outlet' for me. The [Popflex] owner is a Swiftie and it's been so amazing to see her patented designs get recognized. I love the way these leggings hold me in and also have no front seam," she says.

Power Bank
Iniu 140W Power Bank ($72, originally $100)
Chapelle calls a power bank an absolute necessity when she's reporting or writing on location. "I often feel like I'm 'on call' all the time. You never know when or where [Swift] might pop up for an appearance, and I've had my laptop die mid-post too many times to ever solely rely on internal battery power alone ever again," she says.
This device specifically is Amazon's top choice, as it's able to charge both your phone and laptop in a pinch. There's a USB-C in/out port, a USB-C fast charging port, and a USB-A port built in, plus a smart LED display that shows battery percentages during the charging process. It also comes with a three-year warranty and promised lifetime technical support from the brand.

Tom Ford Perfume
Tom Ford Private Blend Tobacco Vanille Eau de Parfum ($166-$378, originally $195-$445)
"Taylor has been a longtime wearer of Tom Ford fragrances. Her go-to is Santal Blush ($255, originally $300), but I prefer the smokier, spiced scent of Tobacco Vanille," Chapelle says. "Like music and fashion, I think scent really grounds us in memories or can be completely transformative and immersive. I love creating a sensorial experience that puts me into a certain headspace when I write."
Chapelle's favorite luxury scent has notes of creamy tonka bean, vanilla, cocoa, dry fruit accords, and sweet wood sap, described as a reinvention of classic tobacco. What's more, it's certified with the Butterfly Mark, which identifies brands that adhere to social and environmental best practices during production.

Fine Jewelry
Mejuri 14k Gold Handcrafted Heirloom Ring ($648)
"I've been a longtime fan of Mejuri for years and love their elegant, timeless pieces. Last year, Taylor actually attended a Chiefs game wearing one of their rings that I have owned forever. It felt fun to have the roles reversed for a change!" Chapelle says.
The Mejuri Heirloom Ring is a consistent bestseller for the brand, offered with a garnet, honey quartz, London blue topaz, or sky blue topaz stone. The jewelry company uses high-quality, precious, and semi-precious gemstones in production and has a commitment to sustainability that you can read about on the site.
